Spring Into Lice Prevention: Tips for March

  • February 25, 2026

  • Head Lice

As the weather warms up and kids head into spring activities, sleepovers, sports, and camp planning season, March is the perfect time to talk about lice prevention.

Head lice don’t take a season off. In fact, increased social interaction during spring break, sports practices, and group activities creates more opportunities for head-to-head contact — the primary way lice spread.

The good news? A little prevention goes a long way.

Why Spring Is a Key Time for Prevention

Spring brings:

  • Spring break travel
  • Team sports and group photos
  • Sleepovers and birthday parties
  • Camp sign-ups and early camp events

More kids together = more chances for lice to move from one head to another. Lice don’t jump or fly — they crawl during close contact. That’s it. Simple, but common.

If you’re proactive now, you can avoid a stressful surprise later.

1. Avoid Head-to-Head Contact

This is the #1 way lice spread.

Encourage kids to be mindful during:

  • Selfies
  • Group huddles
  • Sleepovers
  • Team practices

Quick reminders before events can make a big difference.

2. Wear Hair Pulled Back

If your child has longer hair, wearing it in a bun, braid, or ponytail helps reduce contact. Loose hair makes it easier for lice to transfer during close interaction.

It’s a small habit that adds a layer of protection.

3. Do Weekly Head Checks

Early detection prevents bigger problems.

Check:

  • Behind the ears
  • At the nape of the neck
  • Close to the scalp

Look for nits (eggs) firmly attached to the hair shaft. If you can flick it away easily, it’s likely dandruff — not lice.

Five minutes once a week can save you hours later.

What If You Do Find Lice?

Don’t panic! And don’t waste time on ineffective treatments.

At Lice Clinics of America, we use the FDA-cleared AirAllé® device to eliminate lice and eggs with heated air treatment. It’s fast, safe, and highly effective — often completed in a single visit.

The most important thing is acting quickly and confidently.

Make March Your Prevention Month

Spring should be about fresh starts, outdoor fun, and family time, not scratching and stress.

By building simple prevention habits now, you can reduce the risk of an infestation during busy spring and summer months.

If you ever have questions or want peace of mind, schedule a professional head screening at your local Lice Clinics of America. Prevention is easier than treatment, but if you need us, we’re here.
