Best Defense Against Head Lice? Be Prepared.

If you are a parent of a school-aged child, the odds that your child will contract head lice at some point are very high. Some 12 million children between the ages of 3 and 11 get head lice annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most parents, however, are completely unprepared when lice happens to them. And most trek immediately to the drug store and unwittingly purchase products that no longer work.

While it has been widely reported that scientific studies show that 98 percent of head lice in 42 states are resistant to the pesticides used in the most popular over-the-counter lice products, doctors and pharmacists continue to recommend these products as the first line of defense.

Unfortunately, it takes a couple of weeks to go through the over-the-counter treatment regimen. Most require an application, comb out, and checking for lice and nits for at least two weeks. After a couple of weeks of struggling, parents start searching for a better solution. Oftentimes, that’s when they find Lice Clinics of America.

Lice Clinics of America is changing that with a first-of-its kind medical device that kills lice and eggs in a single hour-long treatment. The device is called AirAllé, and it’s an FDA-cleared Class I medical device clinically proven to kill live lice and more than 99 percent of eggs. Lice Clinics of America has more than 170 clinics in the U.S. alone, and more than 120 more in 33 countries around the world.

The AirAllé device takes a novel approach to lice treatment by using warm air to dehydrate lice and eggs, rather than using insecticides to poison them. This makes it equally effective against pesticide-resistant lice.

One thing parents can do to be prepared for head lice is to search for a Lice Clinics of America clinic and keep the number handy. Lice Clinics of America also offers home-treatment products to prevent lice and to perform lice removal at home with safe, non-toxic products that also make it easy to fight resistant and non-resistant lice.

These products are available at clinics and at major retailers like Walmart and CVS. Keeping them on hand, and regularly using prevention products can help keep lice from infesting your child in the first place; and from a panic attack if and when lice do strike!

Lice happen. For most parents, it’s a matter of when, not if lice will happen. It pays to be prepared and to have a game plan ready for when that day arrives. While it can be an uncomfortable topic to discuss, it can also be a good idea to talk to the parents of your children’s friends to agree that when one of the children get head lice, the parents will communicate so that all can be immediately checked and treated if necessary.
